Ep 28. Creating a Strong Plan to Tackle Student Loan Debt with Connor Pierce
Student loan debt can feel overwhelming and never-ending, and I know that from personal experience. It’s a reality many of us struggle with—whether you have $20k or $200k in loans, it’s easy to feel stuck or defeated. In this episode, I’m joined by a special guest, Dr. Connor Pierce, DPT who understands exactly what it’s like to graduate with student debt. Ep 25. Is Occupational Therapy a Dying Profession!?
Is occupational therapy a dying profession? Depending on who you ask, you might hear it is. Scroll through any OT Facebook group, and you'll find comments about burnout, dissatisfaction, and people leaving the field. But while this may reflect some people’s truth, it doesn’t represent most of us who love what we do and value our profession, even if we wish to see changes. In today’s episode, I’m sharing my take: Why are people saying this? Is there any truth to it? Plus, I’ll give my honest opinion on recommending this field to others and tips for those feeling burnt out—how to reignite your passion. Bottom line: OT isn’t dying…but OT as we know it is changing - as it should. Just as we as practitioners are constantly growing and evolving, our profession has to grow and evolve too.

The new grad season is such an exciting time, but there’s also a lot to juggle as we enter this new chapter of our lives. In today’s episode, I’m joined by Paige Leite better known online as P the OT to talk all about the importance of building and prioritizing a healthy money mindset even as a new graduate. Paige is an occupational therapist with about 3 years experience working in a variety of settings. She decided to jump into travel therapy as a new graduate and one of the reasons was so that she could maximize her income in order to tackle her massive student loan debt. We also chat about what it’s been like navigating the financial side of adulting, her plans for early retirement, paying off her loans, and so much more. Ep 21. The Unfiltered Truth about OT School
OT school for me was one of the most profound seasons of my life. It’s the season where I can wholeheartedly say I experienced the most tremendous amount of growth as a young adult. And although I may have made many mistakes while in OT school, I truly look back on this time with absolutely nothing but gratitude and happiness. In today’s episode, I’m sharing about my time in OT school in hopes of inspiring those of you who are maybe preparing to begin school or are currently attending school. Of course, I’ll also be sharing tips and tricks related to navigating the transition from undergrad to graduate level learning, choosing your OT program, studying, the finances, preparing for fieldwork, maintaining a social life, and of course the sheer balancing act of it all. It’s officially occupational therapy month! Happy OT month to all of the incredible OT practitioners out there making your mark on our profession, and changing the world. Today on the show we're joined by Nancy Yamoah, OTP who is a light in our profession, and truly embodies what it means to be a fulfilled and happy OT entrepreneur. Although OT isn’t perfect, Nancy and I both believe we all have the ability to really turn this career into the perfect for each of us based on our unique interests, skills, and abilities.
Ep 18. Money Matters in Occupational Therapy
I love OT and I love what we do as OTs but I can’t help but to feel like we’re not spending enough time talking about the real issues in this profession that are impacting so many of us; from burn out to unrealistic productivity expectations to pay stagnation to crippling student loan debt. Every profession has its drawbacks and flaws - but I truly believe a large majority of the issues OTs are facing all tie back to one thing: money. So, in today’s episode we’re getting right to the heart of it and breaking down the money matters that need to be brought to the light in this profession. What does money have to do with the emphasis on starting businesses? Is entrepreneurship the new gold standard in this profession? Is traditional OT fading into the background? What does money have to do with the push to start businesses? Is money an underlying factor in the rapid rate of burn out OTs are experiencing? And lastly, why are we feeling guilty for wanting to make more money as OTs? I’m ready to dive into it all and give my honest hot takes because money is a real part of life, money matters in the real world, money matters to us as adults, and money matters in occupational therapy.

Ep 17. Tackling Taxes as an Independent Contractor with Carol Alvarez
Independent Contracting. Two words that might make you raise an eyebrow especially if you’re a student or a fresh new graduate because contracting is just not something covered extensively in our OT programs. But - just because it isn’t covered, doesn’t mean it should be ignored or overlooked. Independent contracting can be an amazing income boosting opportunity especially for OTs looking for ways to maximize your earning potential.
Ep 16. Lessons in Living Fully: Honoring Emilia Dewi’s Legacy
This episode is dedicated in loving memory of my sweet friend, Emilia Dewi. To know Emilia was to know a person who was passionate, kind, a true fighter, an advocate, and beautiful inside and out. She was an absolute gem of a human and a bright spot in the world of OT. Her legacy will leave a tremendous impact on her patients, community, and our profession as a whole.

Ep 15. Learning Grace in The New Grad Season with Domonique Gholson
OT is not all rainbows and butterflies and unicorns and fairy dust. The fact is that there are a lot of things we would love to see changed about our profession so that it can actually rise to the potential that we all know it has. As a student, new graduate (or soon to be), it can be extremely discouraging, overwhelming, and downright scary to hear us practicing clinicians sharing the realities of what it’s like to be an OT because the truth is nothing can really prepare you until you’re actually in the field.
Ep 14. No One Goes Into OT to Become Rich...Right?
No one goes into OT to become rich, right? I mean certainly there’s careers and fields out there that when people pursue them, it’s known that they’re going to be financially comfortable, on some level. So maybe they aren’t going into those professions to become rich but they do know okay I’m going to make a good living. But - is OT one of those professions? Do people look at our career and say to themselves “that’s definitely a path that will lead me to be where I want to be financially”? Today’s episode was inspired by a lot of things - the recent medicare cuts, the recent boom of OT entrepreneurship, the ongoing conversation across social media about how as a whole OTs aren’t particularly satisfied with their pay, and lastly, how OT was just named #4 in best healthcare jobs. I’m giving my uncandid, no fluff, brutally honest opinion. Of course, I’ll never leave you on a negative note so we’re also going to be chatting about how you can maximize your earning potential in this career and ultimately how our profession can be associated with financial comfort because my dream is for us to become one of those professions that people pursue knowing they’ll be financially comfortable, not struggling.

Ep 13. The Occupation of Motherhood with Ally Owen
Becoming a mama is arguably the biggest role change someone will ever experience. The occupation of motherhood is beautiful, exhausting, chaotic, but so amazing. It’s life changing in so many ways - mental, emotional, physical, spiritual, and of course financially. But how exactly does becoming a mama change us an OT? And what happens when we decide we want to pause our career as an OT to pursue motherhood full time? What do those sacrifices look like? Today on the show I’m joined by my very sweet friend, Ally Owen, who is an occupational therapist and fellow stay at home mama. In this conversation we take a deep dive into the occupation of motherhood and particularly what it’s like being stay at home OT mama’s and the silent sacrifices that we’ve had to make to make this dream we have for our motherhood journey a reality. So, if you’re an aspiring OT mama or current OT mama who is thinking about how your career may be shifting or need to shift in order to accommodate for this new role, and the financial implications that may bring, then this is the episode for you.
Ep 12. A Mirracle Wrapped 2023!
Wow. I can't believe we're here. It's the final days of December and 2024 is right around the corner. Where in the world did this year go? I didn't pick a word of the year but if I could pick one now, it would be "transformative" because this has been a life changing year on so many levels. I became a mama, my family moved (a lot!), and I formed some of the most beautiful friendships and relationships of my life. So today's episode is a little different - it's less action packed, more chit chat. I really just wanted to catch up, chat about life updates, and of course talk about some goals (personal, financial, and business ones) as we enter into the new year. So grab your favorite holiday beverage, whether that's hot coco, apple cider, or even egg nog! Sit back, relax, and let's just have a chill end of year catch up. Sound like a plan, friend? Let's do it.
